Every parent wants to give their child a healthy start in life. That is why Canadian firm Pure Organic Foods has added Nutri Child® to its Bolivian Royal quinoa-based products, an organic and gluten-free baby food line specifically designed for infants between 6 months and three years. The key ingredient in the recipes is the quinoa grains which provides a nutritional profile that resembles natural breast milk. The addition of organic fruits and vegetables creates a superfood that is packed with proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals necessary for healthy growth and development.

Although many importers are cautious about dealing with a line for delicate customers like infants, Carlos Zamorano, founder and CEO of Pure Organic Foods, believes that there is a unique opportunity in the baby food segment. “New mothers are extremely aware of the quality of the food that they feed to their babies. Quinoa itself is rich in iron and essential amino acids involved in nutrient absorption. Our products are prepared with the love and care of a dedicated mother,” says Carlos.

Pure Organic Foods has been supplying restaurants, bakeries, and retailers with delicious and natural GMO- and gluten-free products since 2011. Their range also includes grains, cereals, flours, jams, and ready-to-eat meals.

In recent years, quinoa has become a popular alternative to rice, bulgur, and couscous. Canada is one of the few countries that has been growing quinoa in small quantities for more than 20 years, although it is most commonly sourced from Bolivia and the Andean highlands in Peru and Ecuador. Quinoa is an excellent source of protein. It is one of the few plant foods that contain all the nine essential amino acids. It also has almost twice as much fiber as other grains, which makes it great for babies with sensitive digestive organs. Many mothers love this versatile grain because it works as a good laxative and prevents excess bloating. It is safe to introduce quinoa into a baby’s diet from eight months of age.

“At Pure Organic Foods, we have two core values. Firstly, to generate value-added products from Bolivia to keep organic farming alive and support the communities there. This also creates a sustainable supply chain that benefits all stakeholders equally. Secondly, we believe that the future of humanity depends on vegetable-based protein products and our vision is to bring the best to the market.”

Bolivia offers the ultimate supply matrix with its combination of the Andes, fertile valleys and the Amazon rainforest. It is the only country to grow Royal quinoa native of the unique mineral-rich soil of the Uyuni Salt Flats at 4,000 meters above sea level. Bolivia is also the world’s first country set to pass a law granting Nature equal right to mankind, known as The Law of Mother Earth.

The global baby food and infant formula market reached a value of US$ 50 Billion in 2017 and is expected to grow even more during the period 2018-2022, according to the latest report of Technavio global technology research and advisory firm. This growth is a result of an increase in working parents, more mobility and a growing number of health-conscious consumers who demand fresh, nutritious and convenient baby food. An interesting prediction is that brand loyalty is likely to rise with millennial parents.

Pure Organic Foods whole product range is free of conservatives, preservatives, and other harmful ingredients. Its trademark Nutri Child® baby food and the Pure Organic Foods ready-to-eat meals are prepared using retort processing, where all raw ingredients are inserted into the final packaging and submitted under high pressure. This process destroys bacteria while the food retains a higher proportion of nutrients than with standard methods of sterilization. The products have a stable shelf life of 15 months. The baby food recipes have been developed for babies with a sensitive digestive system, and are validated by nutritionists, food engineers, pediatricians and parents of babies with weak digestion. This makes Pure Organic Foods the perfect choice for any parent.

The suggested retail price of Nutri Child® is CAD 2,59/ USD 1,99 per unit. The distributor in Canada is Star Marketing. Already this season Nutri Child® will be on display at Rexall pharmacies and selected retailers.

“We also have a subscription service in our online store,” says Carlos. “Online sales are growing across North America and Canada, and we will put some effort into expanding in this marketplace.”

The baby foods currently come in six different delicious flavors, and another six are being developed. Only whole organic foods low in allergens were selected in the formulation, and no salt or sugar or any other ingredients are added.

“The difficulty with organic certification is that all ingredients in each formula must be organically certified,” explains Carlos. “Nutri Child® tastes so good that any family member will enjoy it. It is an excellent source of iron for elderly people.”

Finally, Carlos shares some tips for new entrepreneurs from other countries who wish to enter the highly competitive North American market. “It can be complicated to build a sustainable supply chain and to scale up production. Finding the right partnerships is 75% of the work if you want to build a true farm-to-table story.”

Carlos also emphasizes that it is vital to develop value-added products on site to keep the local organic farming alive. He has also learned not to depend on a single distributor but points out that in this case, adequate operating capital is needed to store the product in local warehouses.

“The most important thing for doing business in North America is to make sure that the brand complies with all the regulations and market requirements to be competitive. It has been a challenge for us to achieve this without losing the Bolivian soul of Pure Organic Foods.”

The success of Pure Organic Foods is built on ethical business and a profound sense of respect for the environment, the growers and the customers. The launch of their new baby food line means health-conscious parents can introduce their children to the wonderful world of nutritious food with a top- quality formulation.
