Group Casino reported total group sales at €11.9 billion in the second quarter, with organic growth (at constant scope and exchange rates) of +6.5% (excluding petrol and calendar effect), in line with the previous quarter.

Casino said there was a gradual improvement in activity in France, featuring in particular a recovery in Géant sales and continuing strong growth in international sales, up +10.9% driven by Brazil.

The gross merchandise volume of e-commerce activities were up +24% at Cdiscount and +44% at Nova Pontocom.

In France, at Casino banners, the operational efficiency plans have offset the investments in pricing. Margins remained solid at Monoprix and Franprix. Profitability at Leader Price declined under the impact of the price cuts implemented since Q4 2013. Retail, supermarket and convenience sales fell by 2.3%.

Internationally, all operations recorded an organic increase in profitability in the first half. Trading profit for the food activities in Latin America increased by +18.4%, including GPA, Exito and Libertad banners, with sales up 11.6%. The Asia food retail business increased by +6%.

In July, Casino Group announced the signing with Coopérateurs de Normandie-Picardie and Mutant Distribution of a commitment to purchase 63 convenience stores operated under the banners Mutant Express, Point Coop, C. Express and Le Mutant, in exchange for an exclusivity agreement.

In this second half of 2014, the Group aims to roll out more discount banners, strengthening the positioning on premium formats, and accelerate expansion in convenience.
