French retailer Groupe Casino has reported solid sales growth in France and Latin America for its first quarter 2016 sales to EUR10.807 billion. Latin America food sales were up 8.3% on organic basis with a marked improvement in Brazil (up 5.7% in Q4 2015). Exito sales (excluding Brazil) had continuous accelerating growth with good performance in all countries.
For food sales in Brazil (GPA Food) the improvement was marked, up 7.8% on an organic basis and 2.2% on a same-store basis.
Assaí cash and carry continues to enjoy very good performances with sales up 36.2% on an organic basis, driven by same-store sales and dynamic expansion. Traffic is up on Q4 2015. The Multivarejo retail businesses posted stronger sales at Pão de Açúcar and at its convenience formats, with gains in market share.
Groupe Casino supplies 10,618 stores or franchises in France and 3,851 stores in Latin America, with 2,126 stores in Brazil.
In France, total sales for the first quarter were EUR5.548 billion, a good performance with 2.9% growth on an ‘organic’ basis and 1.5% on a same-store basis, Groupe Casino said on April 14.
Store traffic rose by 0.8% and market share in France rose +0.1 point over the last Kantar research period.
Monoprix stores, which includes the Monop small food store concept and Naturalia stores, posted a strong performance with organic sales up 2.3%, boosted by a dynamic expansion and a gross opening of 80 stores since Q2, 2015. Monoprix food sales were virtually stable over the quarter and performance satisfactory for household and leisure on a same-store basis.
Same store sales at Supermarches Casino were positive and grew by 1.9%, Franprix sales were up 0.1% in same store sales, similar to the performance of Casino’s other banners in France that were in line with Q4 2015.
Other highlights were Géant Casino with 4.0% growth (same-store and organic), and Leader Price with continuous growth at 7.2% on organic basis and 4.5% on a same-store basis.
Casino’s e-commerce posted growth of gross merchandise volume of 4.2% at constant exchange rates.
Casino announced the closing of the sale of Big C Vietnam to Central Group, for an enterprise value of EUR1 billion. Casino will continue its sourcing activity of Vietnamese food products distributed in France, Brazil and Colombia. Casino has now sold its subsidiaries Big C Thailand and Big C Vietnam.
